In the Lands Between, a person's soul is different from a person's mind since the D twins "are of two bodies and two minds, but one single soul" (Twinned Set). And you do need at least a bit of Mind to cast sorceries.

UPDATE: As for why Godwyn couldn't protect Fia from D...have you tried using Rancorcall in PvP? It's not great. And Godwyn only has a limited amount of Mind to cast. To me, this makes Godwyn having to witness her death but being unable to stop it all the more horrifying.

One thing that really made me think about this is the fact that in the SotE the Death Knight gear says the quest for his cadaver surrogate for the upcoming age of the Duskborn. Really changing the perspective on the fact that Godwyn is just a suffering mass "I have no mouth and I must lord" style, but that his own loyal knights are decking themselves out in Prince of Death themed gear and are questing to forward that goal.

It’s not that he’s conscious. It’s more of a bodily instinct. He is a god. And there have been plenty of showings some people are able to move on instinct, even when their brains are not really functioning

The way I look at it is body<mind<soul, the soul controls the mind and the mind controls the body. If you take the soul from the equation then the body and mind just lay there and go out of control because the soul grants intent and the ability to want to do things. Take away mind and you get the skeletons, they have the soul and desire to do things but lack the mind to control what they do hence their proclivity to violence.

Imagine being betrayed by someone you never even had a intention to hurt and have your soul killed and your body and mind suffering a mutation that makes you look like a mermaid and you keep spreading death trough the whole land with your best friend trying to fight the corruption that took over you and end up being corrupted as well, just to in the end a gentle soul lie beside you to birth your “son”. Damn it Godwyn lore is a tragedy trough and trough, he deserved better, he, fortisax and his knights.

Of all the horrors in Elden Ring Godwyn is the one that gives me the creeps the most. Specially the cutscene with his eye rolling to look at the camera and his mutations, and the way he is just steadily infiltrating everywhere lands between, and shadow land.

I believe it is more like bloodborne. His body is alive so he remains in the nightmare realm, as his body is still an anchor. When you fight the dragon, you are going into their dream. Godwyn is alive in some form or another. His body is jacked up, and the death rune murdered the connection of body and soul.

Godwyn's story is by far the most fascinating part of the lore left unexplained for me. I really hope they do a sequel with his doom as the central focus.

Godwyn has to be one of the most intriguing and interesting gaming characters of all time. There is so much about him, yet the player never gets to actually meet him.

I always thought the reason she said “godwyn is that you” is because by damaging her you’re getting her closer to death meaning she’s getting closer to godwyn. That’s what I love about souls games, some people might see something in a different light than others
