If you got no rails you can also just keep it slow. Holding on your. Rail just prevents you from loosing balance and maybe unwillingly moving backwards. But depending on how you shift your weight and angle your foot you can prevent this.

If the area you live in is nice, you can find a ramp to skate up if they have mercy on people with wheelchairs.
