They were with us in sorrows and tortures,
As a great example and sacrifices for us,
Great fighters: Mazepa* and Petliura*,
Petro Doroshenko*, Bohdan* and Taras*.

*Mazepa - Ivan Mazepa - hetman of Ukraine in 1687-1709, who uprise against Moscowy, national hero of Ukraine, was a symbol of Ukrainian national-liberation movement in XVIII-XIX and begin of XX century. People, who were fight for the independence of Ukraine were called "mazepyntsi" in that time.

*Petliura - Symon Petliura - head-otaman and head of the Directorate of UNR in 1918-1921, national hero of Ukraine, was a symbol of Ukrainian national-liberation movement in 1920-40 - people who fight for the independence of Ukraine were called "petliurovtsi".

*Petro Doroshenko - hetman of Ukraine in 1665-1676, national hero of Ukraine, famous as leader who unite Right-bank and Left-bank Ukraine, which was divided after Chorna rada in 1663.

*Bohdan - Bohdan Khmelnitskyi - hetman of Ukraine in 1648-57, leader of Ukrainian national revolution, national hero of Ukraine.

*Taras - Taras Shevchenko - famoust Ukrainian writer and painter, ideologist of the struggle for independence of Ukraine

I won't hide, just few years ago I wasn't a friend of Ukraine and held on do some old grudges between Ukrainians and Poles. I grew out of this already some time ago. Now i know that it was needless (and probably engineered) squabbling of what should be natural friends facing one, true enemy. And from what I'm observing, my newfound attitude became overwhelmingly common, even among nationalist politicians. I do hope that this will be mutual, and of this tragedy something beautiful may bloom for our nations.
