If your friendship breaks over a movie discussion it was not a real friendship in the first place 😂

In the preface of an old art history book (circa 1970s) the author wrote about this effect on society, that people are drawn to what they have access to; couple that with a human tendency towards convenience, and you have the perfect target for consumerism. Marketing has evolved into a science that convinces people that commercial products are the most accessible and desirable means to experience art, despite the fact that art galleries, libraries and even occasionally museums are free.

We certainly should vote with our wallets, but that alone will not be enough. I explain this in my pinned Tweet:
Major production studios are currently controlled by Environmental, Social, and Corporate Governance (ESG).
ESG has very specific cultural requirements which result in these formulaic scripts and obvious political messaging imperatives.
By complying with these requirements a business is given access to government subsidies and asset-manager investments. That is, for making these particular movies, these movie studios are getting income not just from the audience but from trillionaire asset managers and the government.

So, certainly, we should pay independent content-creators directly and bypass the major studios, but ESG delenda est.

Many movies that make a ton of money, but basically suck from a plot and story perspective, are propped up by CGI and eye candy. People know this but go anyway just to see the pretty pictures.

The bottom line is monopoly. Starting in the late '40s and picking up momentum through the '90s, an understanding that people will buy any entertainment/distraction, no matter how bad it may be, has been adopted by every industry. We've seen this progression throughout every industry and the entertainment industry is no exception.
When only one or a handful of companies control a market, it is both easier and cheaper for them to put out crap because they know no one can produce anything better and people will buy whatever they can get.
This is also at the heart of the writer's strike.

Movies suck because technological advances have pooled immense amounts of money into a few hands. Those people don't care about getting more money. They want influence. They want to force their beliefs on the little people, and the losses it costs them to do so is a mere rounding error in their world.

Here is the value (market capitalization) of some major independent entertainment companies, in billions:
Sony 114
Nintendo 48
Netflix 142
Fox 15
Warner Bros Discovery 30
Disney 177
Electronic Arts 34

Here are the values of the big tech companies, in billions:
Apple 2630
Microsoft 2276
Amazon 1067
Google 1338

If you're an executive in that world, losing a few million on a movie or show doesn't matter much, as long as your peers view it as virtuous. Rings of Power lost a few billion? Who cares? That's less than one percent of Amazon's value.

TLDR: Advances in technology have made the big companies so unimaginably wealthy that they care more about virtue than money. It'll take them a while to go broke. But these people are vain. Mockery scares them far more than poverty.

I agree over pretty much everything but I have to add the contribution of Blackrock and Vanguard: if they want shitty movies they will get them and keep the studios afloat with their never ending supply of money. The power of the wallet of the customer is mostly lost in nowadays scenario.

A “good movie” is really just one I personally like based on my opinion informed by experience. That right there is the issue/answer!!! And it only took seconds!!!

The comic book movies and remakes have destroyed the classic golden era of action movie stars including the likes of Arnold Schwarzenegger, Chuck Norris and Van Damme. Hollywood don't make them anymore. Nowadays the actors in action movies dont fit in the 80s and 90s well. Theyre not action stars.

I think the core reason reason modern Hollywood or blockbuster movies are bad is a capitalist dilemma. Their goal is to make the most money while investing as little as possible. That means cutting every possible corner from effects, to staff, to sets. That’s why Disney pipeline movies dominate everything now. Star Wars and Marvel movies are safe financial investments because they’ve developed a formula that generates its own advertising and brand recognition. The films we call classics were made in spite of capitalism not entirely because and we’re seeing a time when popular film is changing to meet consumerism needs like Netflix Hulu etc.
