Gibraltar residents, Spanish residents, Spanish nationals and cross frontier workers will be able to cross the border into Spain, despite new border controls implemented by the Spanish government to curb the transmission of the new Covid 19 variant discovered in the UK. This has been confirmed to GBC by a Foreign Ministry spokesperson,
Yesterday the Spanish Government joined a number of other countries in announcing new travel restrictions from the UK following the discovery of the new Covid Variant which has been demonstrated to be 70 percent more contagious. They also announced there would be new controls at the border, although it was unclear at the time what these controls would mean.
In a press conference following a meeting of the Council of Ministers, Hacienda Minister Maria Jesus Montero Cuadrado said the travel ban from the UK would come into force at 6pm and last for 14 days. In reference to the Gibraltar border, she said only Spanish nationals, residents and cross frontier workers would be able to cross into Spain.
However this was later clarified to GBC News by a Foreign Ministry spokesperson, who said Gibraltar residents would also be allowed to cross the border.
The spokesperson said access would not be allowed for any other national, for example UK, who was not resident on the Rock.
