History and popular thought records George Washington as the first American president. But there was some 13 years between the Declaration of Independence in 1776 and Washington's Inauguration in 1789. In this period, several men held the ceremonial title of 'President of the Continental Congress' Of these men, John Hanson may be the closest to being 'first' president.
