Ross' Hobbyking B-17 Maiden and Crash!

My mates maiden of the HobbyKing B-17 goes horribly wrong!

We think one of the right hand motors may have contributed to the crash. It seemed to slow and almost stop just before take-off.
This may have caused the right side to drop in the air as my mate commented he was trying to turn to the left but she wouldn't budge.
We're pretty sure going by the video that this was the problem.

Not to worry, she'll be back in the air in no time!! :)

Hey Jase. B-17 lost on a mission. This is why this hobby is so interesting. You never know if the flight will end with landing on the wheels. Oh yeah... But like I always say: I dont mind the crash as long as its on the camera ;) I have a baby like this for a month or two and we had such a good time on an airfield with it... Stay well and see you soon, Robert

I'd say tail heavy and weak outboard right engine. That's how it reacted, a yaw toward the weak engine and a right hand roll onto it's back.

I know it was sometime ago this happened - but it still hurts when one watched it on video - Did you every find out what caused it - It did not look as if that single outer motor would have done it - from watching it over and over again It looks as if it is Tail heavy ? did you repair and fly it again with the fixed motor and same CG ?

Sorry bout the crash. Your plane looked very tale heavy. I have this lovely flying plane and I used 2 x 3300 3s packs. I think you where a little under weight in the nose with the 2200 you used. Hope this help with your next flight after repairs.

Just finished the build on the B17 v2. I plan to use a 4000 mha 3 s. To get the CG at between 38 and 45mm I had to add nearly 600grams in weight to the nose. I thought can't, be right so checked with HK that the CG in the manual was right. HK confirmed the CG from the leading edge. Looks a great plane hopefully maiden it soon.

Ouch. Commiserations, that is hard. Back to the shed and hope it can be repaired.

I doubt it was the right outer motor. The plane was going right when she dropped. If it had of been the right motor she would have gone left. I have a feeling there was a mixture of poor flying in there as well. Bad luck.

it's was obvious a centering problem. She's was tail heavy so too pitch sensitive.
