So You Want to Buy a Xbox 360? - Revisions, Modifications, & Recommendations!

So you want to buy a console? Well, you've hopefully come to the right place! Welcome to the first episode of this series in which I aim to dissect one console per episode and take that time to educate you all on any worthwhile features, any "GOTCHA!" moments to look out for, revision differences to keep in mind, and finally... Modifications! This series does not serve to be a "buying guide" in the traditional sense, so you will not get many peripheral or game recommendations from here. Optimally I want to show people why they might want to consider a certain older game console, and if they pick one up what they should look out for, as well as modifications they can perform in the future.

Why?! The interest is there! In 2017 my best performing video on this channel was a PS2 teardown/modification video, and I noticed that videos focusing on these older consoles were getting a considerable amount of views. Many people also told me they got so excited from these walkthroughs and tutorials that they went out and bought up these old consoles! Whether its practicality or nostalgia, I couldn't tell you for sure, but the interest is there! Even so, my biggest video of 2018 (and top performing video on the channel overall) has been a Xbox 360 video. Yes. 2018. Xbox 360. I can't make this up.

This video has been made with Fair Use in mind and has been created as an educational piece of media.

I totally disconnected from gaming for a long time (about 10 years) and decided to get back into it last summer. I got a cheap second hand Wii U to enjoy Breath of the Wild and a number of other games on that system, and I got an XBox 360 S really cheap and am really enjoying that console. The games may be old, but they are new to me, and there isn't much on other newer consoles that would make me go with them instead of what I did opt for

This video is DEFINITELY for me!!

I used to get 360's from ewaste and restore them to usable conditions. Never found a RRoD'd Jasper out of the 100+ 360's I got. Most of the time the dvd drive belts were just slipping. That revision is (in my opinion) for sure the most reliable.

I am one of those Laggers that completely missed the Xbox360 and for that matter the PS3 as well... I have been a PC Gamer for a long time so I just never invested in consoles until 2020 when the Covid shutdown resulted in just enough boredom to make me buy both a 360 and a PS3. I immediately jailbroke the PS3 and that kept me busy for a while but when the 360 arrived I actually created an Xbox account and took it online and I may not even RGH it, I may just collect physical games for the 360 cuz I'm nuts like that.

Dude. You are a life saver. I bought a halo 3 themed xbox 360. Those particular ones have the older motherboard, and yes, experienced several rrods. I really wanted to keep the 360 cause the art design was so beautiful. Thanks to this video, I bought another 360 with the jasper motherboard and transferred it to my halo themed xbox case. Now I have a fantastic looking modded limited edition system that's guarentee to last long. ;)

One thing you forgot to mention was, the 360 e is dead quiet. It is the quietest console i own. I love all variants but the 360 e is the most practical.

To be fair I have no interest in modding a 360, I'm more interested in trying to figure out which model to trust not to become a red ring/dot paperweight.

But this was a very well done in-depth analysis of the 360, on the modding and revision side of things.

My first Xbox 360 model was the the Pro aka "Premium" model from 2007 with the Zephyr motherboard (first Xbox 360 with HDMI) and it eventually succumbed to the dreaded red ring of death due to a GPU failure. I eventually replaced it with an Xbox 360 S model containing the Corona motherboard in 2012 before the hardware started to go sour just a year ago. I currently use the Trinity version of the Xbox 360 S from late 2010 and it functions flawlessly and performs better than my old Corona model.

As an avid 360 gamer myself, here's the advice I'd give for acquiring the most reliable model:

1. Avoid every original model from 2005 to 2007 with the Xenon and Zephyr motherboards at all costs. They are the most susceptible to the dreaded red ring of death. Xenon has atrocious CPU capacitors and GPUs. Zephyr has improvements with CPU capacitors but it doesn't do jack squat since the GPU is still atrocious as it is.

2. Be very careful about the Falcon models from late 2007 to early 2008. Late Falcon models from 2008 are a lot more reliable than the early Falcon models from 2007 but even then, I've seen lots of late Falcon models from 2008 succumb to the red ring of death over the years.

3. If you want the most reliable original model with the least chance of getting the red ring of death, settle for the Jasper model (late 2008 - mid 2010).

4. If you don't want the original model, settle for the early S model with the Trinity motherboard (2010 to mid 2011) since those don't use the 4GB NAND and have a good reputation for high reliability rates (just not quite at the Jasper's level). Be cautious about picking up models from late 2011 to 2013 containing the Corona motherboard and the E models if you can, especially ones with the 4GB NAND flash chips since those are the source of all hardware failures in the later S and E models. The reason I don't recommend any of the E models is because it's prone to XCGPU issues and the early E models use the Corona motherboard.

About the lan/wlan stuff: you can grab any kind of repeater (or router capable of working in that mode) and simply hook it up with the fat x360 lan. Its solves the lan/wlan problem, and a repeater/router have way more powerfull wifi than those dongles.

Found out I got a Jasper and a Trinity. Pretty excited about that. I guess I won't sell my Xbox 360's then. I can vouch for the Jasper being a reliable console as I guy randomly gave it to me missing the power button, faceplate and literally internally buried in what seem like pounds of dust. After a full clean out of dust, debris and hair I was amazed it came on and it kept coming on. Planning on getting a replacement power button and modding the Jasper or the Trinity down the line. Just wanted to say thank you for your instructables, as I am one of the few lady modders out here, who sometimes sells and you have help a bunch. Much appreciated.
