The church is like your parents letting your little siblings get away with stuff you weren't allowed to when you were their age.

My inner 15 year old wants justice. If my mom starts wearing sleeveless tops, I'm never going to let her live it down 😂

As I’ve posted here before, the Mormon god changes his mind A LOT!!

This change makes me so, SO unbelievably mad. I've been out of the church for a while, but my parents are still faithful members. My Mom has been wearing garments religiously ever since they converted in the 1970's. Her garments always not only irritated her, but caused her physical pain. Ever since I was born, I've had similar sensitivity issues with clothing (thank god, I decided I was out before I had to wear garments.) Finally, as a teenager, I was diagnosed with a very, very rare genetic condition. We then discovered, I inherited it from her; she has the same condition. This disease not only mutates the nervous system, making us extra sensitive to sensation and touch, but repeated irritation/pressure on the soft tissues can cause painful lipomas to grow. They HURT, like having rocks growing within your flesh, often pinching nerves and limiting blood flow in the process.
My Mom has rings of these painful tumors around her thighs. Around her waist. All the places where garments have dug into her skin for 50 years of faithful Mormonism.

NOW all of a sudden God says she could have been wearing a slip this whole time?! On the one hand, yeah, I'm glad it changed so at least the next generation won't be burdened quite so badly. But on the other, the sheer hypocrisy and righteous indignation over the damage it has wrought all these years just makes me want to rage at all the bigoted old misogynist white men making these decisions, without once acknowledging where their mistakes, dishonesty, etc have caused significant harm.

Remember being taught that God knows all and is never changing, but he sure does seem to change his mind a lot.

I don't have much of an opinion on the new tank top garments. I'm a guy & the modesty push was mostly on the women. So while I did not like garments, they were never a big issue for me.

IMO, the garment change is just more evidence that the Church is lead by very flawed men (not God) & that the Church merely follows societal trends, albeit many years late.

Garments you can only see with your “ spiritual eyes “ coming soon?

So much changed in the temple ceremony as well. I remember during the temple ceremony, we had to simulate slitting our belly, and say in unison "I would rather slit my stomach from side to side than to reveal the secrets of the temple. Then we had to do that with our throat. And in unison we would say, I would rather slit my throat from ear to ear than reveal the secrets of the temple. That was crazy stuff back then. I think they got rid of a lot of that because it is pretty freaky. Then the whole thing with the curtain, and the points of fellowship. And then the handshakes. I went through the Salt Lake, Temple and the Provo temple. And that was it for me. I realized it was just a bunch of nonsense. Then they told the women their secret name, and you were not supposed to ever say it. Mine was Rita. Turns out that every woman that day got the same name. So much in the Mormon church is weird. But one things for sure they still want your money. That being said, I think every church is weird.

Honestly, the thing that frustrates me the most about this change is that it feels too little too late and bears NO accountability on the church for the harmful modesty culture that has perpetuated religious circles for centuries. I never wore garments, but I remember it being something that I dreaded and stressed about growing up. I didn't feel comfortable in my body, and I didn't see garments as helping with that struggle. I also remember the absolute coginitive dissonance and frustration I felt when I went through a period of time in my early 20's when I endured extreme and very scary male harassment while walking to work on an almost daily basis. I was dressed "modestly, " but that didn't stop the incredibly horrifying harassment I faced while I had that job. It also didn't stop certain church members from trying to blame me for the harassment, stating that I must have worn or done something to solicit that kind of attention. It was the first time in my life that I started to realize that modesty was NOT a gateway to male respect, or my own personal safety. To this day, I can't stand the narratives surrounding most religious modesty directives. On the one hand, I'm glad the church is changing things. Hopefully, some of these harmful narratives will change with the new garments. On the other hand, I feel like it ultimately doesn't matter that they did. The damage has been and continues to be done, and the church will never apologize for it, and making the change doesn't automatically make it right. Not only that, but this honestly feels like a "so many people are breaking the rules anyway, so we might as well change things to make it look like it was our idea all along" kind of directive (some schools are doing the same thing with their dress codes after realizing that they are largely unenforcable). The whole thing just feels selfish and disgenuine coming from a church that loves to control and manipulate people and that has no concept of the harm it does.

Never Mormon- I left a different faith. But, my attitude for this kind of thing is that A) I am happy they are making things better for members and B) This further demonstrates that churches/religions are not genuine purveyors of higher knowledge, but rather institutions of people who are making it up as they go along.

I am not mad when these kind of things come out for my former denomination, but I am put off by the fact they don't see their own hypocrisy as they do it.

The church is coming across as desperate now to figure out what they can do to keep their members from leaving. LOL!

When I was in the US military in 85 I was authorized to wear green garments.

My prediction is that one day in the not too distant future, garments will be optional. And mostly just something worn during temple ordinances.

The Mormon church and Jehovah’s witnesses have made a lot of changes. The leaders of both have noticed how they are both losing members, and finding ways to try to keep remaining members locked in.

Anything is possible when you claim a monopoly for divine revelation.
The European beachwear version of divine revelation makes the top optional.

I just heard about this from an active member last night. It was extremely confusing to me because covered shoulders was such a big deal for such a long time

Personally, I’d like an apology from the church leaders for the embarrassment and shame gifted to me from “good Mormons” who not only believed they had the right to police my body but that it was their righteous duty to do so. I’m proud to have left this church, I am so proud to be an exMo.
