Congress in Karnataka is struggling to fill the financial gap, thanks to their power hungry populist freebies approach to win elections. Currently many of state projects are put on hold as almost 20% of the state budget is redirected to pay for free bus travels, free unemployment benefits, free rice …. I agree with the contention of Mr. Chidambaram that growth rate in the UPA regime was much higher than that in the 9 years of the Modi regime. However, that is to be seen in the context of overall global scenario prevailing during the relevant periods. In the decade from 2004 to 2014 the world economy grew from $44.14 trillion to $79.45 trillion (80% growth). In the succeeding 9 years the world GDP was $105.57 trillion (32% growth) India’s growth during the relevant periods was 186% and 84% respectively ( The related GDP numbers are 2004: $0.72 trillion, 2014: $2.04 trillion & 2023: $3.75 trillion). The conclusion is that India has not done badly during the Modi regime. So, Chidambaram’s argument is not factual. India grew in the Manmohan Sigh era because the global economy was growing. Now due to pandemic, global economic growth had a setback, yet Indian economy fared comparatively better.
