CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Joe (Denzel Washington) makes the point to the courtroom that the case is not only about AIDS, but also the public's "hatred, loathing, and fear of homosexuals."

FILM DESCRIPTION:
At the time of its release, Jonathan Demme's Philadelphia was the first big-budget Hollywood film to tackle the medical, political, and social issues of AIDS. Tom Hanks, in his first Academy Award-winning performance, plays Andrew Beckett, a talented lawyer at a stodgy Philadelphia law firm. The homosexual Andrew has contracted AIDS but fears informing his firm about the disease. The firm's senior partner, Charles Wheeler (Jason Robards), assigns Andrew a case involving their most important client. Andrew begins diligently working on the case, but soon the lesions associated with AIDS are visible on his face. Wheeler abruptly removes Andrew from the case and fires him from the firm. Andrew believes he has been fired because of his illness and plans to fight the firm in court. But because of the firm's reputation, no lawyer in Philadelphia will risk handling his case. In desperation, Andrew hires Joe Miller (Denzel Washington), a black lawyer who advertises on television, mainly handling personal injury cases. Miller dislikes homosexuals but agrees to take the case for the money and exposure. As Miller prepares for the courtroom battle against one of the law firm's key litigators, Belinda Conine (Mary Steenburgen), Miller begins to realize the discrimination practiced against Andrew is no different from the discrimination Miller himself has to battle against. The cast also includes Antonio Banderas as Andrew's partner, Joanne Woodward as Andrew's mother, and Stephanie Roth as Joe's wife.

"We don't live in this courtroom, do we?" A dagger of a line.

I love how the undertones of the movie are heavily about how human beings are more alike than we like to admit. In spite of someone's sexual preferences, we all have the same challenges - mistakes we've made, career ambitions, and family. It's interesting that, as opposed to most other films with a similar theme, Andrew had no struggles whatsoever with his family life. His family accepted him always and there was no conflict there. His conflict was only with society.

He's right, he was afraid of his client but eventually got to know him so now he's showing everyone that homosexuality is nothing to be afraid of!

Hanks and Denzel both are one of the finest actors Hollywood has got.

Tom Hanks really comitted to this role. If you've ever seen a person who was wasting from AIDS in real life, you're you can't help but feel sympathy for Hanks' character.

This scene alone should've at the very least gotten denzel a nomination for this movie. Simply amazing

Denzel was brilliant in this scene. Joe Miller basically was purging himself of his own homophobia.

Does anyone else notice how the dramas of the 90s have almost constant background music present? That just isn't the same nowadays

“With all due respect, your honor, we don’t live in this courtroom do we.” Mic drop.

Am I the only here who thinks the Denzel Washington deserves the Oscar better than Tom Hanks. Hanks nailed it in the second half of the movie but Washington's role is more challenging.

It always amazes me how they say that justice is blind to matters of "Race, Creed, Color, Religion and Sexual Orientation". LMAO who are we fucking kidding?

Amazing how, almost 30 years later, the premise of this movie is still quite timely...

This movie made me cry so hard! Tom Hanks was brilliant as always in this and I loved that speech that Denzel Washington made about our fear and loathing against
people who love differently well its NOW accepted in our society now! That ending that he made to the judge "WITH ALL DUE RESPECT YOUR HONOR, WE DONT LIVE IN THIS COURT ROOM DO WE?! EPIC LINE!
