It makes sense. It’s Sonic in his modern design, but in a game that’s more similar to his classic adventures. It feels like a transition between his earlier stories and the stories of the Adventure games

Sonic 4 doesn’t feel Canon since it obviously feels like a remastered version of the first two Sonic games, Sonic 1 and Sonic 2. This honestly surprised me, since I didn’t think that the Modern Sonic Era starts in Sonic 4.

Thats a shame. One of the things i liked about 4 episode 2 is that it was modern sonic choosing to go on classic shenanigans for a change after a while of not doing them in-universe

Well that definitely makes sense considering not just the fact that it's Sonic 4, but also the fact that out of the presentation of the game makes me feel like it is meant to take place after Sonic 3 & Knuckles anyways even though I can't really explain why it looks that way.
