This is why its super funny when i see people in our generation say that they would have never been racist, a homophobe, a transphobe, a nazi, a soldier that's part of a genocide, etc if they were born in that era. The need for community is very strong in humans. It may not be a big community. But a community nonetheless and that's why people who ACTUALLY stand up (and they're the only one who does) against the popular opinion is impressive.

I laugh at how good Stephanie is at story telling. When she speaks you’re a immediately in a trance and start imagining the world of the story she’s explaining. Fucking great 🙌🏾

All I could think about during this story was ” we are so naive to think we can not fall back into this” and I kept making connections back to the early nazi times when this was almost exactly how it started just very naively and innocent.

This movie is actually based on a book by an American Author, Morton Rhue from 1981. He based it on a teaching experiment by a teacher in Palo Alto. In Germany we had to read it and afterwards we watched the movie in class. As far as I can remember the character of Tim ( I think in the book his name was Robert) doesn’t kill himself in the book. The experiment just ends with the assembly.

I am German and we watched "die welle"....let's say alot of students found this so inspiring and started the same thing like the teacher. They got arrested and that was very scary because half of my old school got arrested.

Honestly one of the things that would definitely make you end up in a cult is thinking "No, I'm smaaart and I would never be convinced to be in a cult" like, you need to be aware that under the right conditions you will succumb, then be careful when those conditions appear so you don't end up following because it satisfies your vulnerabilities.

as the story progesses too, i slowly recognize the roles of each students and their parallels irl. prof w: the leader, tim: loyal aide/follower, caro and mona: activists, and the rest: sheep. this is how it translated to me, you are welcome to further expand this or give a different interpretation!

no heckin' way- if teachers made us stand up to answer a question, my anxiety would absolutely _skyrocket._ 😭

growing up in a german speaking country this movie is genuenly so iconic and i can tell you every school kid will watch this movie in class some day (probably when learning about WW2). It really does still have an impact in school and its so fun to hear your telling of the same story i grew up with

Honestly I get it
When your life at home is terrible, lack confidence or have mental health issues, don't have any friends, feel like you don't belong to anything

These kinds of things can push you into something like this

Like no joke, I would've joined them. To be able to fit in and not get bullied, people have my back and want to help me, building my confidence and self esteem up, it's like getting a whole new family. It sounds great.

But obviously something like that as shown can end very badly.

I think it's really important to always remember how easily you get sucked into these kinds of things. Even in school/work, you adapt to the group you're in and might let them do or say something that you dont completely agree on because they're your friends. Usually that isn't bad but that combined with someone who might have mental illness or someone who is manipulative that could mean mental/physical/financial abuse for years which is so harmful to the group/individual.

It’s the one movie we could always convince our teachers to watch 😂 it’s relevant for history, politics, social economics, philosophy.
