Not able to catch Mareep in Crystal would be like not able to catch Shinx in Platinum.

I am just now learning that Mareep was not catchable in Crystal, and that just boggles my mind. I can’t imagine Johto without Ampharos!

Also, while you can find Seedot and Nuzleaf in both Ruby and Emerald, it's much easier in Ruby because they have a 1% spawn rate in Emerald (excluding swarms)

This practice of making an enhanced version of a JRPG about a year or so after it's initial release was actually very common. Typically companies would add quality of life features, bug fixes, new content, and content that was initially cut from the game due to deadlines to the international versions of JRPGs and then re-release them with the changes in Japan. If you've ever seen a Japanese game with international version under the title that is almost always why.

Honestly, it's kinda why whenever I replay a game these days, I'll go for enhancement hacks, having Pokémon locked away like that (WHY CAN'T YOU CATCH MURKROW OR MISDREAVUS IN PLATINUM) is just such a pain
