Flashback Friday: Depression Lies About the Future

In this edition of Flashback Friday, author and mental health educator Douglas Bloch republishes a previous video in which he talks about what happens to the brain when a person becomes severely depressed. The brain says that there is no hope for the future, that all is lost. But this is not true. A depressive illness distorts the brain's ability to see reality clearly. The true reality is that hope exists and people do get better.

It lies about the past too. "When was the last time I felt okay?" "I haven't felt okay in years" "how have I even lasted this long?" "Surely if I haven't felt okay in so long I never will" etc etc

It all true!! One year ago around this time I was totally depressed. I was in the throws of alcoholism and couldn't get sober. My forecast of the future was all negative and misery. My brain saw nothing good to look forward to. After I went to Ashley's Alcohol treatment center for one month, and received after care from loving people, my brain changed. Now I'm almost 100% better. My brain has completely changed for the better. My thoughts are positive and productive now. I'm a completely different person. It just took time--one day at a time.

How are you Doug?

Yes. Depression is associated with an overly negative view of everything including self, your past, present, future, and the world.

I find CBT helps to have a more balanced realistic view.

Thanks for all your good work.
😊🙏

I'm 3 months in. They usually last 6-8 months going by previous episodes. I just wanna be free of it, it's ruining my relationship and my career. I'd feel better if i was old and knew the end isn't far away. I'm 40 this year and don't want to do another 40 years of 3 good years followed by a bad one. I'm going to live completely sin free from now on and hope it wins gods favour and de-risks a relapse. Maybe that's the lesson all along?

Just what I need right now. Even though I'm doing well I'm struggling Douglas. With this Country literally becoming a living Hell, It's hard to be optimistic about anything, but I'll keep trying.

Hi Douglas. I've been prescribed Prozac and started taking it a couple of days ago. I am hoping I will start to feel better soon. I've been told it will take a while to start working. It's frustrating because I want to feel better as soon as possible.

I wish I saw this you tube channel before my daughter ended her life at the age of 16. My life has been nightmares ever since then. I came across with this quote title : the death of a child. It’s like losing your breath and never catching it again. It’s forever panic attack as your soul is screaming for them. It’s feeling your heart is dying as you continue to lose your mind.
I pray everyday that god will take me to her so she won’t be alone. I miss & love her so much it 💔🦋
