The man who killed 14 people in New Orleans on New Year’s Day visited the city twice in the months before the massacre, recording video on Meta smart glasses, investigators have revealed.
Shamsud-Din Jabbar, 42, used the glasses to scope out the city’s historic French Quarter on a bicycle as “he plotted this hideous attack”, the FBI special agent Lyonel Myrthil told a press conference on Sunday. Jabbar also wore the glasses during the attack but did not activate them to livestream the massacre, Myrthil said.
Jabbar, a US citizen and military veteran, pledged allegiance to Islamic State before he rammed a truck into a crowd of revellers on Bourbon Street in the early hours of January 1. Jabbar was gunned down moments later in a firefight with New Orleans police.
