Software for a portable device that uses DNA to test for biological agents has won two innovation awards for PhD student Evelin Linardy, of UNSW Australia and SpeeDX Pty Ltd.

Deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) belongs to a class of molecules called nucleic acids. Every living organism has signature nucleic acid. We're used to hearing about DNA in crime shows to test the presence or absence of a suspect at the scene of the crime. But DNA can also be used to test for pathogens in water, for bioterrorism, for contaminants in food, for genetically modified organisms, and for molecular markers that might point to cancers, genetic mutations and other traits.
Normally testing for DNA requires sophisticated lab machinery but Evelyn's innovation, called EzyAmp, can be as simple and portable as a pinprick test for blood sugar.
It has won her two awards for student innovation in the UNSW Innovation Awards 2013.
