Blackmagic UltraStudio Mini Recorder: Perfect YouTube Streaming Tool?

Another tech review today but still relevant to my channel and my Porsche content. In London I purchased a Blackmagic Design UltraStudio Mini Recorder. This little grey box allows you to contact your camera to your Apple MacBook Pro allowing you to capture and record the footage from your better mirrorless or DSLR camera. It also provides a better way to stream and avoiding your inbuilt isight camera. The purpose of buying this was an idea to make my Porsche Chat a livestream. Let me know in the comments if you would watch it! Cheers Michael

The list below of what I used to make it work!

Blackmagic Design UltraStudio Mini Recorder

AmazonBasics High-Speed Micro-HDMI to HDMI Cable

Apple Thunderbolt cable

Apple Thunderbolt 3 USB-C to Thunderbolt 2 Adapter

The other option from Elgato

QUESTION: My PC has a USB C / Thunderbolt port. Can I use this to convert the H.264 signal that comes out of a Blackmagic Design ATEM Television Studio Production Switcher? I need to convert it to something my PC can read? Thank you.

If you have the money then I'd recommend buying a Blackmagic Design Web Presenter device. It's more expensive but it'll convert the signal internally and present the signal via USB (not thunderbolt) to any device. It basically makes any computer see a high-end camera as a usb device (or webcam).

4 hours yesterday trying to figure out why I could see the Mini Recorder but not the camera and then I saw you clicked the HDMI from SDI button....! Thank you. Hopefully, it will now work.

OK how is it working with the latest and greatest version of OS X Catalina in 2020, does it really offload that much processing to the device rather than the MacBook Pro? I know the graphics cards a pretty powerful even until Iris ones but would be nice to have less of the CPU churning and getting this device to do the encoding which I think is its purpose right.

Strange thing that my Sony Alpha A7S2 works with mini recorder only if i switch to NTFS and AVCHD 24p, so it have some problems with DSLR cameras, check it before buy)

Hi, I've done all of the steps and the mini recorder shows the connection, but when I go into Facebook to do a live video, it only shows the laptop camera as an option and not my attached camera. I am not sure if it's a setting on my camera that I need to adjust? Something about HDMI. Any suggestions? If I have this camera attached, it should show the camera as an option in programs like FB Live, Skype, etc. is that correct?

Have you found any good recorders other than QT? Good review, I feel your pain... I've already suffered thru all the stuff you covered. I'm using a old GH4, works great. 10x better quality than my crappy Logitech webcam. Blackmagic Media Recorder only sees the camera audio (via HDMI). as far as I can tell, there's no option for an external mic. And Mac OS doesn't see the camera's mic either (because the audio is embedded in the HDMI). Zoom and Quicktime work perfectly with an external mic. However Facetime doesn't even see the UltraStudio Mini Camera, any clue why?

Curious, I had the same thing happen with Quicktime. I can't get it to work properly and it crashes. Have you gotten it to work? Great video!

Hey I just stumbled across your video and I pretty much have the same setup as you. But I can't get my camera to pop up on Zoom? It works fine on Skype though. Do you have a paid version of Zoom? I'm running the free one and I can only see my FaceTime camera on my MacBook Pro but no options for the Blackmagic UltraStudio Camera. Trying to work out if it only works on paid versions of the program. Thanks for your help with this!
