I'm a boomer...we could ride our bikes everywhere all day long...loved our independence... feel sorry for children these days..hollered at for playing video games inside..yet can't go outside alone 😢😢😢😢😢

We rode our bikes everywhere, our parents never knowing where we were. We never felt unsafe.

I went to the grocery store (busy street); mom and pop store for cigarettes for my parents; meat store; ice cream store where the kid always gave me a treat; flower store. All within a short distance. But all alone😮. In when the streetlights came on. No one knew where we were.

I'm a boomer. In the 1950s when I was 6 my Grand parents would send me to Bob's News Store about a quarter of a mile away from their home every Sunday morning to get the Boston sunday Globe newspaper. Nobody thought anything of it. It wasn't considered unusual, risky, or dangerous.

He was actually on a few episodes of law and order before he got famous. He nailed the roles too

At 3yo, I would perch on the bartop where my Grañ had placed me to be admired & adored by her & friends. 😊

When I was in third grade I walked over a mile from home to the piers on the boardwalk by myself. I'm still here 😃

As a kid, I used to go out all day long, alone or with mates and cycle for miles or stop at the beach. No mobiles, so I guess my mum just assumed I`d come home when my stomach told me

In the 1970's when I was 15, my great-grandmother would send me to the liquor store to "get me a half-dozen beers, " and tell them it was for her. So I'd ride my bike a mile, get her beer, and rode home carrying a six-pack.

Yes. At 6 /7 years old in early 70’s sent to General Store for Flour and Sugar …. Sold by weight. A real little house on the prairie village store in Ontario🇨🇦. My kids couldn’t go to blockbuster up the road in 90’s till they were 12 and with a big group of friends🤷🏻‍♀️🤷🏻‍♀️Times have changed…. 😢😮

I remember going to the vending machine to buy a soda rather than deal with evil Giants😊

Along with grownups knowing each other, I remember being very surprised to learn that my teachers were actual people who didn’t live at the school somehow.

I am that mom. I ven made my child go back to the counter at Woolworth when she did not receive the correct change for her purchase. I did stand from a bit of a distance so I could observe what happened. As an adult, she can handle any situation. I am so proud of her.
We moved to the when the others were still very small, so they did not receive the training she did. Still great humans and I love them.

We were never sent on errands. We were definitely “latch key” kids, but rode bikes to school and back in groups.

At 5yo, crossing the street to buy cigarettes for my mom!!! All alone!! Granted it wasn’t far, but we never had adult supervision.

I have struggled with this for years when it comes to other parents. These parents have been brainwashed into believing that talking about the scary stuff makes kids safer. It just makes them insecure, unaware of how to get home, and extended reliance on their parents.

I'm 65. My dad used to send me to buy him cigarettes when I was 8. 😅😂😅😂

Gen Xer here. I was free range and there were definitely times I felt unsafe. Like Jim said, it was usually adults who made me feel that way. We lived in the country and I got myself into a million situations I had to get out of by getting lost in the cornfields or trees, swimming too far out into the pond or whatever, but that’s didn’t feel like a safety issue. The only time I was actually scared for my safety was when we were in a park or somewhere in town and adults would approach us and ask strange and invasive questions

Different times. My father once got me to take my BF with me to pick up a brand new MGB he had bought. I couldn’t drive stick. Dealership was 30 miles away & he was at work.
