Bushcraft shelter door hinge with saw, hatchet, and knife #shorts
Показать описание
Making a simple hinge for a semi-permanent bushcraft shelter with a bow saw, shovel/hatchet, and a fixed blade knife.
RESOURCES:
In a previous visit to the shelter, I installed a pin in the ground to serve as a lower door hinge. Like the lower hinge, the upper one is also a simple wooden peg sticking into a divot in the end of the door's left side.
The first task was to make a board with a wedge-like cross section. This was driven into a dovetail slot cut from the left side of the door frame. The Cold Steel Spetsnaz Shovel did a great job shaping the board and hogging out the dovetail cut.
Once the horizontal board was in place, I used my knife to chisel a square hole through it. The hole is for a peg that I carved square at the top and round at the bottom. The square upper end seats firmly in the horizontal board. The rounded end is the upper pivot for the door.
To my surprise and delight, both upper and lower hinges worked as planned. I want to be very clear with you: this is NOT how things usually go.
I will work on adding a threshold of some sort to fill up some of the space below the door and come up with some means of closing up the gap on the right side of the door.
