In the Avatar short story New Recruits Team Avatar sit at a bar table, hoping to recruit potential rebel benders and allies against the fire nation
Old Man Yahshi brought the group here and proceed to introduce the potential candidates he had found
The first is Analay a shadowbender that can manipulate her own shadow to bring down enemies
Analay demonstrates her powers on Aang who can’t help but giggle
Next up is the earthbender Hiroshi with his signature tunneling sneak attack, he also has a rock dragon Genji that Toph takes an interest to
Then we have the northern waterbender Visola who taught herself how to bend and craft her own weapons
She shows off her wave ring which Katara wants to try out
The final candidate is Riley, who has mastered cookie bending and Sokka stuffs his stomach full with cookie dough
The gang debate privately on who to recruit and Sokka’s choice is crystal clear but when they have made their decision, they realize all the potential candidates had left as Old Man Yahshi says they went to form their own gang

The world is divided into four nations -- the Water Tribe, the Earth Kingdom, the Fire Nation and the Air Nomads -- each represented by a natural element for which the nation is named. Benders have the ability to control and manipulate the element from their nation. Only the Avatar is the master of all four elements. The ruthless Fire Nation wants to conquer the world but the only bender who has enough power, the Avatar, has disappeared ... until now. His tribe soon discovers that Aang is the long-lost Avatar. Now Katara and Sokka must safeguard Aang on his journey to master all four elements and save the world from the Fire Nation.

I feel like shadowbending could be a real thing as an extension of firebending, in that it's a manipulation of light.

Practical applications could be camouflage, blinding opponents, providing shade for hot weather or nocturnal plants, heck maybe manipulation of photographs, and of course shadow puppets.
