5 web-based AI tools you should know about

Currently, the most sought-after application of AI video technology is text-to-video AI. The idea is anyone will be able to type a prompt into a text field and within seconds, or more likely minutes, a video will be created using an AI model. As a creator, the idea of my job so quickly being replaced by AI is terrifying, but as a tech nerd, I am intrigued. So I wanted to see how close we are to being able to simply type text into a website and receive polished video. In the latest episode of my YouTube series Full Frame, I tested five AI video creation tools, Gen-2, Kaiber, Deep Nostalgia, Synthesia, and Unboring, to see what the limits of our AI video creation technology currently are.

0:00 The current end goal of video AI tools
1:17 Runway’s Gen-2
2:12 Kaiber
3:54 Things you should know before using AI tools
5:15 My Heritage’s Deep Nostoligia
6:03 Synthesia
6:50 Reface’s Unboring
7:46 Where I stand on AI video tools

I think it was Ezra Klein who said something like "AI will drive the price of mediocre content way down and will hopefully drive the price of excellent content way up." I think of it as similar to what happened to drummers in the 80s. If you had a career just being a boring metronome for sessions, you got replaced by a drum machine and your job basically disappeared.

Already established creators will feed their own data thus customizing the AI for their unique purposes. If AI can change some exhausting routines for professional creators, allowing them to focus on much important aspects of their work, I think it’s great progress.

I will happily offload rotoscoping to the Ai so I can focus on other aspects of vfx shots; basically instead of keying by color, the computer is creating the matte with Ai vision.

I agree that, as content creators, it is important for us to stay on top of these changes. At the least, for the knowledge of what is out there and how it may help or hurt. I personally am very interested in this new field, but I studied New Media...so it's kind of in my nature.

I think a lot is said about the negatives with generative AI, but it isn't going away and there is so much potential to create things that wouldn't be able to be made before. An individual with an amazing idea can prototype and create a first draft that only a large corporation would have the resources to do without AI.

Similarly how digital photography made it accessible to a larger number of people. I'm a very keen photographer and although I dabbled with film, I couldn't afford to experiment and risking loosing a film and the development costs. As soon as digital appeared, i was able to fully dive in. There are countless other examples where tech has democratized a skill. Not saying it's all good, but that the positives are often overlooked.

Becca, you’re one of the tech reviewers I respect the most. Started with those earbud reviews but I see your thoughtfulness and humor shine through. And your commentary on the issues AI showed me how much you really care.

It is impressive to see the advancements in text-to-video AI and image manipulation.

Personally, I just hope we remember that the best work has a human element to it.

Hi Becca.
I have been playing with Adobe PS beta and have found it really useful for correcting my compositional mistakes. I do however feel like I am cheating in a much bigger way than just putting in a few colour correction or similar. I wish it was possible to have generative fill use my image base as it's source rather than an external one so it was all my work.

My thinking is AI would enable many more people to create a lot more than they would be able to otherwise, by virtue of not being creative themselves; but this also opens the door for true blue creatives to be able to push themselves higher and higher. All of this assumes AI gets proper, decent laws and regulations at some point here in the US, and I could easily be wrong on both counts.

great to point out the privacy right and copyright issues. 🎉

I think there is a lot of unwarranted fear mongering about AI tools. This has been a common theme since the 60's were misinformation about AI has been used to successfully stiffle it's progress over the year. I'm less worried about the uses of AI and more worried about what companies are doing with my personal data/ prompts when I use AI tools. Privacy is huge concern for all companies who deal with the public. With strong privacy regulation, there is nothing to worry about. Except maybe certain jobs becoming obsolete in the future.

I'm not sure I agree with the sentiment that these AI tools are going to put huge numbers of creatives out of work. Many times when new tools like word processors or telephones came out, they put some people out of work at first but then created many new jobs down the line. It is also usually the case that these very cheap and easy to use AI tools will massively increase demand which will reduce barriers to entry and cause more people to pursue this kind of work.

As someone who almost got a degree in animation, I can tell you animation is a slog and extremely time consuming and difficult if you don't have an innate artistic ability to draw or illustrate. A lot of people probably have ideas for cartoons or animations that would improve their content but it is too expensive, difficult and time consuming so they just give up. If these AI video and animation tools improve to the same degree we have seen Dalle and midjourney improve, we might have a golden age of indie animated films in a few years with many more people working in that industry than do today.

Good video, Becca. Thanks for the pointers to the tools.
I think spreadsheets are an interesting point of comparison. Before spreadsheets, people doing any serious sort of math analysis (accounts, modelling, that sort of thing) had to do the work by hand. Watch "Hidden Figures", for example. Within years of the introduction of spreadsheets, hundreds of thousands of people who had made their living as accounts clerks by updating these tables manually with calculators lost their jobs. However, because spreadsheets made things like modelling, accounts and data analysis of all sorts much easier, more work for qualified analysts (accountants, etc) became available. In the end, more people became accountants than had lost their jobs as clerks, so employment in those areas increased overall. And people who might never have thought of doing simple analytics with a calculator and ruled sheets of paper now open spreadsheet apps without a thought. Theoretically, these tools put a film studio in every device with the power to run them. And then as usual, it's down to being creative enough to win eyeballs.

If you're into metal, Periphery used this for their "Atropos" video. Came out awesome.

But Becca, what about stable diffusion and the open source stuff? Regulating companies is one thing but anyone with a half decent GPU and time can make videos and photos all on their own

I always let out a huge sigh when someone says “AI scares me.” AI won’t take your job. Someone who’s good at using AI will. Use it and don’t fall behind!
