What is Active Directory?

James Conrad explains what Active Directory is and how it helps IT admins manage permissions and control access to network resources. Active Directory is responsible for many things on a Windows network, including how you control resources and permissions for users.

Active Directory (or AD for short) is the primary resource for controlling IT resources and permissions for organizations using Windows domains. Active Directory Domain Services (AD DS) is the core component of Active Directory. It’s a data store that’s easily searchable, working as a tree and leaf system so that permissions and information flow through groups and objects down to people.

What does Active Directory Domain Services (AD DS) do?
- Stores data of users, computers, groups, and other objects (printers, shares, GPO)
- Easily searchable (global catalog)
- Offers integrated security
- Logical and hierarchical organization
- Uses a schema to define objects and attributes
- Is efficiently replicated

I've been running a domain controller at home for about 15 years now. It makes things so much better when you have a home server.
I'm house sitting for my auntie, and I can VPN to the home network to access all of my files.
Literally any time I get a new computer, it's as simple as connect it to the domain, move the computer to the correct OU, log on, and wait for offline files to synchronize.
GPO takes care of everything for me... Just like that, it automatically blockes MS Edge, installs Chrome, set my hompepage, install my chrome extensions, downloads my documents, pictures, music, set my desktop theme and wallpaper, install printer drivers, connect to the main printer, and many more things.
If I had to do this for every computer at home, I think I'd lose my mind.
These days I usually only have the server on for a few days a month to save on energy bills. This is enough time to log onto each machine and let them synchronize offline files.

You have a video named what is active directory and the you start talking about the applications of active directory...Cumon talk about the very question what is active directory, what are the protocols make active directory possible... This talk is coming from a regular AD administartor and not from somebody who loves the protocol...
