Nice lanterns. Yeah, restoring old things can be a long process, sometimes. We all have different levels of tenacity... Or maybe it's just toleration of chore involved. Me, I'm a Army veteran: no matter how grueling the task or training, we just grinned and asked for more. Haha, that was 3 decades ago. Yeah, i have two lanterns in my shed. Even though it is wired, the lanterns provide light and heat! Not 40kBtus, but just enough to take the edge off of a 25°F day. Looking forward to the lamp cookery...could be a hit!

Thanks a million! I found an old lantern similar to yours and couldn't figure how to remove the shade. I was getting closer then did a search.
I have to clean mine up and repaint it.
Cheers.

Awesome job on the CT ham lantern there Ken! Me too I’m a wick snob too myself, as I like to have the flame just perfect & fine tuning on the trimming of the wicks on my lanterns! 👍👍 Neat little battery lantern too & a cool air duster that you scored too! 🙂🙂 Beautiful day here to light a few lanterns & it’s lantern time!🙂🙂

Because of the LED kerosene lantern: My tip against bad contacts on battery terminals and in switches (tried and tested for years): Always spray or drip oil on it. Use resin-free household oil or sewing machine oil, etc. (not an oil that thickens and becomes resinous like motor oil). The oil prevents corrosion caused by moisture and thus prevents poor contacts for years. The contact surface must of course be bare and clean, so brush or sand beforehand if necessary. I oil all battery contacts, especially in outdoor devices, which works practically as well as gold-plated surfaces. Normal contacts are nickel-plated or brass and always form an oxide layer that can be a barrier to electrical current. Oil largely prevents a disturbing oxide layer.

I understand the wick trimming preference. The flame should burn properly

What kind of paint do you use on the oil burner?

As a collector I am surprised you don't trim the wick ends or slightly half moon. My mother showed me many years ago.

Nice Ham New Style! Yeah, sloppy red paint is a PAIN!!! You did a good job. Say, that’s a really cool Warren Sta-Lit there! Love that metal on it! I’d love one of those!

Just last week, I saw 2 lanterns with thick paint. It seemed the sellers were trying to hide the rust.

Hey Ken. I’m about to get my first lantern. A feuerhand 275 from EBay. Not sure what I’m getting or how old it is but it looks pretty clean.

Another great video. I need more practice with wick trimming. I take the scissors and cut straight across using the burner as my guide. Still, it seems the flame wants to do its own thing. 😀.
Do you prefer a certain type or brand of wick?
I just bought the cheapest 6 foot role of cotton wick for lanterns on Amazon.
Thanks for sharing sharing.

Just found you, great stuff. 👍
I prefer an arched trim myself. Lol
That blower looks good, better than the cans of air and easier than dragging out my compressor!

You should look into setting up a electrolysis tank which can be done in a 5 gallon bucket. It's really easy and much cheaper and less labor than paint stripper.

Hello, could you tell the name of the small lantern again, please? It's so beautiful, but I don't know the type of it.
Thank you!
