A few weeks ago, we attended the Gathering at Five Medals in Goshen IN. We went with an experiment in mind - could you make a mud oven from scratch at an event and bake in it the very next day? You are about to find out! #townsendsonedayoven #townsendovens

I did it!  I built one, on the ground.  I named it Lumpy.  It looks great I can't wait to use it, I did not have cotton fabric to use, so instead I used some large zucchini leaves for the top and it worked just fine.  Also, once the leaves burned away, they left a cool imprint on the inner part of the oven.

Your channel is such high quality. Whoever does your cinematography, editing, etc does an amazing job. It's so cool to see such production value in something so niche and particular

PBS wishes they could make series this good! The content, the presentation and the whole attitude is so professional that it draws you in even if the episode does not align with your particular interests. Kudos!!

During the great trek by the boers from Cape to johannesburg they simply used the anthills. Just dig out the cave in the side of the termite mound and bake bread

Here in Asheville, NC we've got a guy who built one on a trailer that he tows around. He makes the best thin crust pizza in town.

I've wanted one of these ovens for years! Seeing how simple you made this one, it may be a possibility for me after all! Thank you! ❤

This is really terribly fascinating. It prompts one to think about how things we take for granted-like a hot oven at the ready..would take so much effort. Also, it’s fascinating that you can deconstruct the oven and pry the mud off and leave barely a trace. Just wonderful!

I have used bran and water to seal my cracks on cook events. It seals up and acts like cement. Give it a shot some time, works well in a pinch.

That bread couldn't have looked better! I can't even master homemade bread with all the modern amenities! Great job!

a wet towel on the door makes a good seal and adds moisture for the early part of the bake. It took me half a summer to make mine and moved several years later. The new owners weren't into it and the oven went back into the field it (mostly) came out of.
