The only problem with Wolpes explanation is that the account of the Torah is supposedly Gods words, which would make God a liar, or better a fabulist, a storyteller. In which case not a single word of the Torah can be relied upon as factual, or it’s up to the reader to discern fact from fiction, which would in essence make the reader the final authority and not God.

With all due respect, the mental gymnastics that this dude plays, are next level.

well, Jesus had to explain Torah to the religious leaders of His day, so this man's disbelief, while sad, isn't surprising

"The Bible's not a book of history." It's a story book.

Religious people make me laugh. These people have convinced themselves of this reality. So weird!

Israel didn't exist until 1948 so for him to mention exodus to a place called Israel shows he's an ideologue first and foremost.

For many believers the issue is that it is literal history.

Go see if the events of the pharaoh at the time of the exodus are accounted for in Egyptian history… as a culture that only accounted for wins and victories of the pharaoh (to keep their god-like image in tact), this pharaoh seemingly disappears from Egyptian history at the exact time that the parting of the Red Sea is said to be parted. Why? He was killed along with his entire army (one of supreme military might in comparison to other communities at this point). Immediately after this, Egypt entered the Hyksos (“foreign rule” in Egyptian) period. This land went though many years of foreign kings because of some mysterious event. Which event? You tell me.

The Bible is Christian Mythology and nothing more. Bring a myth does not take anything away from the lessons the myths are trying to teach

If you can, find an old dictionary. Look up the definitions of "truth" and "true". Then Google the definitions and compare. This guy is really banking hard on the "belief" part of the new definition of "truth".
Having said that, one can be truthful without being factual providing perspective is accounted for.

Look up Professor Christine Hayes at Harvard and you'll get the best context for the Hebrew Bible.

These stories are way older than any religion. If they hold a truth, we definitely wouldn't know it.. it's been a long game of telephone.

Evidence exists outside of the Bible that Semites lived in ancient Egypt. Archaeologists have found evidence of 20 or more Semitic settlements that existed in northern Egypt during the time that the Bible says the Exodus took place. Also, a papyrus was discovered in southern Egypt dated to the Middle Kingom (around the time that the Exodus occurred according to the Bible) that included the Semitic names of more than 40 slaves of a single Egyptian estate, which indicates that there were many of such slaves through Egypt. Dr. John Bimson stated: "The biblical traditions of the bondage in Egypt and of the Exodus have a firm historical basis."

There’s a reason The Bible isn’t often mentioned in History class.

I respect his intellect but to me if you have to doubt one single thing in the Bible, it makes it very hard to me to be able to take any of it seriously. Surely if this Gods word, he would see to it that not one single mistake would be in his book. Either it’s all true or not of it is true.
