He has matured politically in the last 5 years. After suffering a bruising defeat in the 2019 polls, he admitted that the party has lost the connection with the masses. He walked the talk by launching a pan-india exercise "Bharat jodo yatra"to re-establish its lost ground connection, removing organisational rust and galvanising demoralised cadre. It worked for him in terms of improving image and perception. Even his political adversaries grudgingly accepted this changing scenario. He also gained a first hand insight of the issues and concerns plaguing the ordinary citizens during the course of this exercise. His image as sane, rational and an individual who is working selflessly for the nation and his tirade of "Mohabbat ki dukaan" to prioritise social harmony and practice compassion started gaining traction. His ousting from parliament for some time also generated sympathy for him. During the LS campaign in a break from the past he displayed coherence and consistency in his rhetoric, message and narrative. The opposition was in full control of the narrative and campaign while BJP only reacted in a surprise reversal. Many congress faithful and Gandhi family loyalists will akin this result to the 2004 results and term Mr Gandhi as a saviour just like Sonia Gandhi did by fighting against all odds. For them, 2024 polls are a result of why Gandhis are intrinsic to the Congress fortunes and the ultimate vote catchers. But Mr Gandhi has a lot of ground to cover, a lot to learn and likely also a lot to deal with in his remaining political life. Earlier, family surname and political expectations overburdened him but he has tried to come out of it by putting the best foot forward this time. One can only wait for the future to see how his legacy is defined and written.
