Hong Kong a 'shadow of what it once was'

Former DFAT Australia-China Council scholar Andrew Phelan says Hong Kong is a shadow of what it once was.

Hong Kong’s election has been condemned by Five Eyes as devoid of any “meaningful political opposition” in the wake of China’s “overhaul” of the city’s electoral system.

The United States, United Kingdom, Australia, Canada and New Zealand have issued a joint statement in the wake of Hong Kong’s elections which closed on Sunday with a record low turnout.

Sitting at 30.2 per cent, the outcome was the lowest since Hong Kong was returned to China in 1997 and far less than the 43.57 per cent result recorded in 2000.

“Today is kind of like the day the music died,” Mr Phelan told Sky News Australia.

“It’s a very sad occasion, it’s as if the spirit of Hong Kong has been arrested and put in a cage.”

Visited HK twice in late eighties, so vibrant, so friendly, so grand. The people were fabulous. How tragic is this death by communism.

And it will continue to decline until it is lowered to the standard Chinese city.

I remember my mother always wanted to make it HK before the handover. She used to say the Chinese government would destroy it. How right she was.

HK was a fantastic place to visit and holiday. The views, Victoria Peak, harbour ferry etc, hotels, the people, restaurants fantastic - or they were. I was there twice in 2018 and numerous times before, but I won't go back now, sorry people of HK but China should have left you alone and just been happy to see the money rolling in!

Love the Aussies talking about the spirit in other countries. People who live in glass houses should not throw stones

Loved everything about Hongkong and flying into on Cathay Air. I viewed HongKong as a separate country. A Cantonese language. A unique culture. Communist have destroyed a Gem of Asia Pacific. CCP will take Taiwan and then Singapore, and Asia will fall under a bamboo curtain once again.
