While the components and power sources are binary, redstone _dust_ isn't actually binary, it can have 16 different powered states from 0 to 15. This attenuates with distance travelled which also increases the complexity of the design.

Redstone actually has 16 states; 1 off-state and 15 "on-state" power levels. While you only need a power level of 1 to activate any redstone components, there are comparators, which can compare and subtract depending on the signal power level. Plus there's the mechanic that redstone loses a power level per block, which can be used as a zener of sorts

learning redstone was one of the most fun things I have done. I ended up making Pong all the way back on xbox 360, it was huge and had some bugs that I never ironed out but it worked and could be played. I also made myself a tamagotchi that you had to feed, give water and play with otherwise it would get sad and eventually die. I loved doing redstone stuff and wish I stuck with it, now I would be right back at square one with all the new tech for it.
