Quick Change Toolpost - Atlas Shaper Machining | Shop Blog

In this week's shop blog, I test out a new quick change toolpost for the LeBlond Regal Lathe, and machine a custom T-nut on the Atlas shaper. I've been looking at quick-change toolposts for a while now, and settled on this one from Colton Industrial Tools. To make it fit the lathe, I used the Atlas shaper to customize the T-nut.

I started out with laying out the appropriate features on the blank on the granite surface plate, using a height gauge. I then got the workpiece mounted in the shaper, and brought it to the rough dimensions. After some measurements, I took a finish pass to bring it to the appropriate dimension, and cut out the T-nut step. After I got one side done, I flipped it over and started the whole process again to finish the other side. After all of the shaper work, the nut was a perfect fit in the lathe compound rest, and the new toolpost mounted perfectly.

Chapters:
00:00 - Unboxing
03:20 - T-nut layout and marking on the surface plate

06:19 - Roughing the blank on the Atlas shaper
09:01 - Measuring and horizontal finishing pass
09:50 - Layout of the T-nut step
10:15 - Roughing the step
12:32 - Vertical shaping the T-nut step
13:45 - Repeating the steps on the other side
14:49 - Finished product, lathe mounting

I'm Chris, and welcome to the shop. Here on this channel, I post videos of my machine work, fabrication, welding, vintage tool restoration, and industrial history, produced in my 1930s-themed home machine shop. Through building and working in this vintage-inspired space, I hope to conduct a little bit of experimental archaeology by using tools, equipment, and methods found in pre-war American manufacturing. Along the way, I'll also show some clips from my side projects and day job too.
