This is because the pants on the figures actually press down on certain pins, which is how the figure can tell what it's wearing. For some reason, Mario's default pants, Luigi's default pants, and Peach's dress all have unique "pin codes", but they have no special interaction if you swap them between the figures. Mario doesn't give a shit if you put him in a dress.

This reminds me of my childhood 😊 ( ok sounds creepy now but hear me out )
I had this one Ben 10 Alien force watch toy on wich you needed those clear plastic figures you would put on the watch and the watch would recognize wich alien it is and play the transformation sound and say the name.
I sat there many times and played with a toothpick or similiar stuff to press some of the buttons and it rarely worked but when it did damn was a happy. I can remeber getting Spidermonkey the most and Brainstorm somethimes. I guess there where others too but I can’t remeber what I got back then with this strategy. That filled my little kids heart

If you ever wonder why or how this works, they update Mario every time there's a new suit or scan, when putting on any of the pants, they will trigger these tiny buttons which will notify him that lets say the cat pants have been put on
