Linus Torvalds going to a Debian conference and saying he hasn't used it is hilarious

Debian was the first Linux Server I set up at 14 with zero prior experience. So it has probably gotten a lot easier since he tried.

But it will always be the mother debian, the true beloved distro

Things have changed

TBH out of all the OS installers Debian is probably the most in depth and No Nonsense with the graphical user interface
right now you get to choose everything you want even down to the desktop environment which you have multiple options which is awesome.

I'd say I have the easiest time with Debian in new installs.

Torvald used a MacBook Air once?

I’m saved, no neckbeard can ever judge me again!

I prefer to use the OS. Not figure out why it has issues.

Fr, I've used a couple of distros but i always come back to Mint because it *just works*. No messy config files or programs to set up, click three buttons and you're good to go

I use the non-live debian cd to install and the installer is best installer I've used.

Linus also ranted about the overabundance of security hoops in the way to get basic things like a printer working.

This story sounds like a joke. Linus Torvald the creator of Linux kernel and Git never used Debian which is the base or the most important Linux distributions. And the only time he tried it was on a Apple MacBook.

I used debium 10 years ago. The start of my interest in Linux and command line. Now I use Kali.

I love how he says close your ears and then says what possibly is the least controversial thing he has ever said. Like what he just said is like negative amounts of controversial

Linux is OK to install, its the installing / uninstalling programs that breaks down for the average user. Me installing apps completely broke my Linux, and I gave up on it.

He is right. What's the point of wasting my time on something that doesn't even install!? Will you try to drive and explore a car that doesn't even start? No. You move on. That's why many office users still love windows.

Debian is so much hard to install, it once corrupted my whole harddisk. Since then I refrain from using it.

I think a lot nerds are terrified they’ll melt and fade into obscurity if they don’t cling onto quirky and uninteresting opinions that ultimately don’t make any sense.

Setup: I want an install to be easy so I can get in with my life.

He said he was having trouble with an install and instead of just proceeding he troubleshot to avoid debian, installing something he was familiar with.

He’s not interested in easy to install folks. He wants familiar so he can work, and that’s what most people want. It just doesn’t sound as interesting when you say it that way.

The same goes for most things in the computer world, at any level. Make installation easy.

I come from a PHP background and have 20 years experience in the field. I’ve turned my back on most frameworks and large platforms because I can get the job done in less time and to a better quality without them. Why do I need 2Gb+ ram to install symfony or more than 32gb to debug magento?
