Every time I hear the cymbals crash, I imagine the boxer's gloved fist hitting a heavy bag.

Rhodesia is now called Zimbabwe, a country in southern Africa.

This song is so important to me. My late mother listened to this incessantly when she knew she was dying of cancer. She grew up in the projects in Philly in the 50's and was always a big fan of boxing. The line "I am leaving I am leaving but the fighter still remains" was her mantra so to speak while she awaited crossing over. Not only that, it's a helluva song. She also saw S&G at an outdoor concert when she was very pregnant w me in '68. Goodbye again, Mommy. We all still miss you like air.

As a teenager, the first time I heard this, I knew I’d be
listening to it till I got old. I’m 70 next week and I am right.
Paul Simon leaves me speechless…such a quiet giant. ❤️‍🔥

one of the greatest songs of
a pocket full of lies and an epic 'tale' Still, a man hears what he wants to hear And disregards the rest. sad it was all a lie- lie lie lie because he squandered his 'resistance' instead of forging ahead he made it all up, sad but true.

First time I heard this I was getting ready for school. It had just been released, and a lot of my classmates were humming this in class until the teacher told the students to shut up. The following week that same teacher had it playing in his car and we overheard it in the parking lot. Hahaha 🤣

Next one to listen to from S & G is, 'America.' You will love it.

This is the magic of the two of them. Once you get a perfect pair of voices, voices that mesh, you can't help but be totally delighted in their harmonies. I don't think they have an equal.

This was just another song in 1969, albeit a really good one. That's how strong the music scene was back then. Musical genius was in full supply.

"I Am A Rock" is this old man's theme song, sad to say.

This is one of their best songs - please check out America also

Paul Simon is a musical genius and had a very successful solo career. You can do a deep dive on him

Great reaction! Paul Simon performed this song on the first episode of Saturday Night Live when the show resumed after the attacks of September 11, He was flanked by members of the NYPD and NYFD in uniform, many still with dust from that day. It remains one of the most stoic and powerful perfomances I've ever seen anywhere. Both Simon and Garfunkel are native sons of New York.

Another great S and G song. Maybe try “Mrs Robinson”. Or “America”

Gentle…. Yes…..but powerful. Sublime harmonies…..with deep lyrics and often just pure poetry. Wonderful songwriting by Simon. Snd the purity of Garfunkel’s voice gave them a sound that has remained unique. No one has ever sounded like them since.
They were a big part of the soundtrack of my college years.

Thanksgiving weekend, 1966, Simon & Garfunkel appeared in concert at Allegheny College, Pennsylvania. I was a freshman and fervently wished to attend but I was called home, 100 miles away, to spend the holiday weekend with family. Greatest regret of my young life!

Paul sings the lead vocal on this one. Art is for the most part singing harmony. Their blended sound was one of their real strengths. If you want to hear Paul's voice solo, you should listen to something from his solo career, which began in the early 1970s. Early hits included “Me and Julio Down by the Schoolyard” or “50 Ways to Leave Your Lover.” From his great album “Graceland, ” recorded a few years later, I would recommend the title track, “Graceland, ” as well as “You Can Call Me Al” or “Diamonds on the Soles of Her Shoes.” By the way, in addition to the lead vocal, all of the acoustic guitar in “The Boxer” is done by Paul. Maybe because he is so revered for his songwriting, I feel that his guitar playing is sometimes under appreciated.

There isn't a song these two incredibly talented artists don't do to perfection. This is art, poetry and music and supreme indulgence of both. The panoply of iconic songs is hard to grasp until you've heard them. Each and every song on this album flows like liquid honey and drips into the next with a precision only masters can achieve. On their own they are brilliant but together they are magnificent. A backdrop to lives now looking back fondly like old friends, (pun intended) watching you discover the love and respect we feel for these songs of our past. Continue through this album one by one then the next, pure gold. 👍💙
