I got similar large flames by totally screwing up the startup procedure of a... Petromax HK500 paraffin lantern.
Top tip: have a fire blanket ready, because "switching it off by releasing the pressure" sometimes... doesn't turn it off at all... 😳🔥🔥🔥
Lesson learned.
