How to apply a food-safe wood finish, using Mike Mahoney's Walnut Oil Utility Finish & Wax.

View the companion article on our blog:

Today we'll teach you how to professionally apply a food-safe walnut oil and wax finish to your next woodturning project, using Mike Mahoney's Walnut Oil Finish and Wax. It's a great looking, food-safe finish for wood that's all natural and doesn't have any chemical hardeners.

A walnut oil finish is perfect for salad bowls and kitchenware, where a durable, food-safe wood finish is desired. Mike Mahoney's Utility Finishes dry quickly and have a prolonged life due to high amounts of Linoleic Acid, which most "off-the-shelf" walnut oils don't possess.

We'll cover the entire process of applying a professional walnut oil and wax finish to a wooden salad bowl, so that you can get the same results on your next turning project! It's a very simple process that every woodturner can achieve easily with just a little instruction. Enjoy the video and please share :)

I love Mike Mahoney's oil and wax!

With the popularity of hardwax oils nowadays, can this oil (in addition with the wax) be used on furniture as an easy natural finish? I know it’s not as durable as a varnish but seems like it has easy repairability too like the hardwax oils.

I've used peanut oil for a lot of my personal finishes, it looks realy close to the walnut oil but it looks like the wallnut oil brings just a touch more depth. they look very close though. I'm also sure walnut oil doesn't kill ppl.

I have this gorgeous mixer my boyfriend got me and it has a wooden bowl. I want to keep it in good condition. Is this good for that? Also does it go rancid after a while? What happens if it does? I don’t my mixer all that often.

When I re-apply the wooden bowl, should I use oil and wax or just wax, since it already had a finish on it?

Great video ! Thanks . Please tell me--with using the Mahoney's Oil and Wax system ( as seen here ) if it's safe to use on a Cherry wood goblet I made for a friend that would like to use the goblet to drink wine out of. The goblet is bear wood without any other finish on it right now, it's just raw wood. Thanks George in Fla.

Looked at getting some but your rates to ship to Canada were twice the price as the product itself. Can you guess how much I purchased?

HI MIKE,
Brilliant video, it looks a superb finish. What's the General name for the WALNUT OIL? I use a purified walnut oil and just wondering if it is the same! I like Walnut oil, it seems to harden the piece over time and gives it a warm lush look! I give a liberal coat and put in a zip lock bag overnight, and repeat the next day and advise my customers to do the same every 6 month's!
Thank you for sharing the video.... I'm always on the lookout to improve whatever I'm doing or making! Take care my friend. MASSIVE THUMBS UP

Hey guys, thanks for the video. I would be interested in trying the walnut oil, however I am based in Europe and am having quite some trouble finding it. Are there any alternatives you could suggest or suppliers I am not seeing? Thanks again!

If you’re making a salad bowl for a customer, do I redirect them to your web site to purchase that finish so they can re-apply when necessary?
