Two assumptions were made here.

1. The construction workers assumed the installation would be okay to cover.

2. The scientists assumed the construction workers would know not to cover it.

Putting a cover over something when doing construction is standard practice. The workers would have gotten in trouble with their team if they got work dust on the device. As others have mentioned, this is a miscommunication that happened someone else in the chain.

Dust is prolific during construction projects. It's standard practice to cover anything that looks sensitive, or in general to make cleanup quicker/easier. They never considered this as an ecosystem. They just looked at it as something that needed to be protected from their actions.

As someone who works in demolition, you'd be surprised how often clients will get mad if you don't cover stuff, even when it's not asked to be done. So I can't fault the guys for that.

My moms friend, when I was a teenager- used to make sealed aquarium lamps. They had tiny fish, tiny fish, and plants inside. Some sand, rocks, and water.
They needed no maintenence.
The crazy thing is he said his grandfathet came to him in a dream to tell him how to make them.

Not at all the construction crew's responsibility to make sure a valuable item was out of their way. They weren't the stupid ones. Anyone who's ever had any work done in their home knows they tell you ahead of time to move anything valuable out of their way.
