When you call an IP address from your computer, it often contacts a different computer over the internet. However, when you call the localhost’s IP address, the computer contacts itself. So, what is localhost used for?

🟣 Program or Web Application Test

Web developers often run tests to see if a program or an application works. By connecting to the localhost, the test runs only inside the computer and system you are using. This test helps check different functionalities without providing access to other computers.

🟣 Site Blocking

The loopback address prevents your browser from entering harmful sites containing viruses. Change the IP addresses of websites you do not want to access into 127.0.0.1, and the site will redirect you to the localhost instead.

🟣 Speed Test

Send a ping request to the localhost to check whether your equipment and Transmission Control Protocol and Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) are in top condition. A ping request can be sent using the command prompt or terminal.
