Fatimah Jackson-Best is a healthcare researcher, advocate, and academic. Since relocating to Barbados from Toronto, Canada she has become involved in research studies at the University of the West Indies and with local and regional organizations. Most recently she initiated her own PhD research project which focuses on Caribbean women's maternal health and explores how women in Barbados experience the baby blues and postpartum depression. Fatimah believes that we all have the right to good physical, spiritual and mental health.
In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

You are so correct Fatima. We often stigmatize mental illness without realizing that we too could become that way. For example, my Mom has dementia. Back home, people would describe her as being "crazy". However, we know now that it is caused by loss of memory and cognitive senses. So thank you for reminding us about this topic and how we should regard it. Hope to hear from you in future. All the best in your career. Blessings!

Thank you for this. It took me becoming a MH clinician to realise that I experienced perinatal depression due to DV. A lot of work is done on postnatal depression, and less on perinatal. Thank you for sharing about your family and raising awareness❤

I arrived here to grab this video as a resour for my paper that discusses connection between wellness and wealth, however I feel compelled to compliment Fatimah Jackson-Best and her discussion about a real issue of poverty and connection between mental health and poor economic status. Thank you!

Great topic Fatima. I just came across this video 9 yrs. later. We too can become mentally ill, and how would we feel being stigmatized. I will present this video to my counseling class tonight. Keep up the good work.

I even had friends who claim they understood how I was feeling and then they would call me a bad mother when I got sad or was experiencing depression.
