His conducting is as much a performance as the, well, performance. Gorgeous to watch.

Although not best overall performance I've ever heard, of this piece (Moscow Philharmonic sounded quite stretched and not very festive in this) it is by far THE best conducting. What a joy to watch. If only he'd had a world class orchestra to perform to his interpretation. In every sense, a conductor as a painter, visually, aurally and musically.

Потрясающе! Браво! Юрий Иванович Симонов чуточку войны в детстве захватил. И это произведение Дмитрия Дмитрича Шостаковича ему очень понятно. Победа! Великая Победа! И Великая Работа Страну в порядок приводить.

Simonov's Tchaikovsky recordings are wonderful too. When I first heard them I knew very quickly that I was hearing a master conductor at work. I believe they were with the Royal Philharmonic, and the musicians sounded like they were playing on the edges of their seats. He had them in his grip, and there seemed to be total commitment.

What a unique treat to watch the technique of Maestro Simonov!  He has total control of his orchestra, and he seems to emphasize the phrasing of this oft performed Shostakovich "war horse".  Bravo!

Maestro Simonov shows himself how to play the piece, he has shown many ideas and a solution for professional conductors too.
The piece is not at all easy to conducting as you might think.

He really always knows the music very well and clearly.
I respect him

I'd like to have seen the solo clarinetist. I'm accustomed to watching concert bands perform this piece where the solo clarinetist is always featured. Kudos to that person, anyway. He/she nailed it.

Festive, thy name is Dimitri Shostakovich!
Yuri, you are an ageless ballet dancer who comes to envision the music as he conducts it and he does it despite his "old age."
I believe I read that Shostie wrote this composition to please Stalin and the other members of the government who were persecuting him at the time.
Dimitri, just know that you please me with this magnificent orchestral miracle and in this composition I hear the greatness that you represent to your country
and to the world.

I am sure Yuri Simonov started to conduct this orchestral piece in front of his little boy's wardrobe mirror long time ago ... He obviously remains the same ! Quite insipring ... thank you !

What a fabulous performance under the balletically brilliant Maestro Simonov. Every phrase and nuance perfectly measured. That's how an orchestra and conductor should sound, as one.

You know after a watching a lot of classical music performances, I wonder about the conductor during the actual performance. I know that the conductor plays an important role in preparing the orchestra for the performance. Years ago WNYC in New York aired the live rehearsals on one of the symphony orchestras, and the conductors would "guide" the musicians to play the music the way he thought the music should be performed. There is an anecdote about the Ravel's Pavane, where the conductor told the musicians, "the princess is dead, not the music, " or like the interpretation of "Rhapsody in Blue, " where I think the original performance tempo was quite fast, and modern conductors have slowed it down. But during the actual performance, some conductors look they are just dancing or doing some eastern motion exercises (for slow pieces), and conductors usually live long lives maybe in part because they do those exercises everyday.

Seems a though Igor must have been the principle since the shot was mainly on him. Man do you have dancing feet when you play. hahahaha

I don't think I've ever seen a conductor try to cue every member of the orchestra before

Nice performance. It's a shame that 3CCCP 1 Russian Television could only afford one camera. Greetings my Russian Friends! Love from Canada.
