This man was born to be a teacher. Talks so clearly and does such a good job at articulating his thoughts

I will never forget my English teacher Beverly. It's been almost 30 years from the last time I saw her. Hope she is well and doing great. She was the best teacher.

Omg Mr. Patrick! Love him from TikTok. I think his videos about his daily teachings with kids are so funny.

I find it interesting that his speaking rhythm sounds more Japanese to me! He just pauses where I feel you would when explaining the same thing in Japanese. :0❤

Well, it's not that they don't do their job, it's that they don't do more than they are paid for. Which is a no go in Japanese society, especially for school teachers.
And from my experience as a former student, when the english teacher doesn't do much work during classes it's because the Japanese english teacher doesn't let them. Because ''it's their class''. Japanese english teachers are often too prideful to let native english teachers teach.

Biggest con is the complete abysmal pay for English teachers

I had a Spanish teacher like this in high school in the USA. This man gave us a workbook and then sat at his desk. You could ask questions but most weren’t even doing the work. He got sent back to Columbia for sleeping with a student. When we were suddenly watching Disney movies in Spanish for a week we knew something was up. A couple kids even guessed right before the news was out because he had been a bit of a creep already.

One of the best experiences of my life was getting to teach English in Japan for 1.5 years. Many of the stereotypes were true about most American English teachers though lol.

Many foreign English teachers there complain about the pay but they are reasonably compensated for the amount of education they typically have. None of the foreign teachers I talked to there had anything more than a high school degree and some college. When I taught in the early 2000s I was making about 27k a year converted to USD. You definitely don't do it for the money.

I worked with a Brit for my first 8 months in Japan. It was all good for those 8 months, then he just snapped. I don't know if it was the horrible pay or that it felt like we were constantly working for 8 months straight, but he started showing up late because he was partying and drinking a lot. There were days you could still smell alcohol on the guy the next morning, and he began to let his appearance go. I went on vacation to visit family for two weeks. I get back, and he's gone. Nobody knows what happened to the guy he just vanished and never showed up to work.

That's a really.... polite (?) con. Some people are jackasses, sure, and that does reflect poorly on everyone else. But in my experience, that was relatively easy to circumnavigate. Actual cons would include:
-Low pay that never increases
-Low ceiling / No real career path (where you start is likely where you'll end up)
-Odd working hours (depends on the institution)
-You have to speak English all day, which inhibits your ability to develop your Japanese (you usually aren't allowed to speak Japanese in a classroom)

If you're only looking to move to Japan, teaching English will get you there. If you're looking to *live* in Japan, teaching English is not the ideal way to go. The reason there's still demand for this job is because most people quit after a year or two.

I don't know, a lot of the schools don't want you to do more than the bare minimum and only follow the ciriculum. You're kinda just there to be a parrot and vaguely interact with the students. Any more than that and you'll get called into a meeting 😂

Thank you! It's really nice to hear this from a foreigner in Japan.

He is clearly a good English teacher because he spoke as if he was reading a report or a novel 😅💚
