As someone that's lived in Denali Nat Park for a summer, and also bluff charged by a grizzly bear out on trail, I can say 2 things that apply here. If you're anywhere near bears, DO NOT EVER KEEP THE COOLER INSIDE YOUR TENT, with food inside! This encounter was ALL the OP'S mistake! HOWEVER, his making growling noises was a great instinct. Bears are scared of loud noises! The vast majority of bear attacks are because they're just hungry, and can smell your food! Even good-smelling hygiene products can smell like food to them!

I've found the best bear defense is not camping in bear territory. Has saved me many times from the potential of a bear attack.

As a former tent camper I'll tell you one of the main no no's of camping. NEVER bring a cooler, bags of food, etc. into the tent, NEVER! Either hang it high on a tree limb or 20-30 ft. away from the tent & always carry bear spray. Personally I always had a 45 with me for protection on top of the spray. Bears are opportunists & can smell food from up to 10 miles away. Stay safe y'all.❤

Years ago, during a snowy winter at Yosemite, I walked into a mother and her cub by a campground restroom. All the advice had been to make yourself big and loud. In my fear, I screamed bloody murder so loud, I could hear it echo off the mountain tops. Mother bear took off at top speed and left her cub. Every camper there came running because I was still screaming. The poor cub was terrified and shaking. It finally ran away and I eventually calmed down. Never knew I could scream like that but so glad I could do it and it worked. First and last time I camped in the snow.

Usually bears do not quit that easily and tear down the whole tent.
It is also very hard to run away from a bear.

Pro animation tip: If you’re creating a character that will be in a misted setting like this it won’t have shadows underneath it so severe as the light is softly diffused over everything fairly evenly and nothing else has a harsh shadow
