April showers bring May flowers explained

Показать описание
April showers bring May flowers.
Where did that one come from?
I'm Storm Shield Meteorologist Jason Meyers.
The old 1886 proverb goes something like, "March winds and April showers bring forth May flowers."
It originated across the pond - in the United Kingdom. It likely came about because April can be a rainy, stormy time in the United Kingdom thanks to the jet stream's position bringing rain storm after rain storm.
The same logic can be applied to MOST of the United States - like the Northern Plains, the Midwest, and most of the Northeast. For these regions, while April isn't necessarily the rainiest of months, it's still a stormy month with plenty of Spring rain showers - at least enough to support a few flowers here and there.
For other parts of the US - this saying doesn't really apply. In the South, it's more like March showers bring April Flowers. In the Pacific Northwest, their rainiest time of year is usually the Winter. In the Southwest, they barely get enough rain to support flowers - but most of the rain falls in the Winter or during the late summer monsoon.
So there we have it. The crumby weather of March and April will eventually lead to more pleasant weather - and flowers in May. Then come the allergies. And the June bugs.
