2nd Enoch: The Secrets of Enoch

The antediluvian patriarch Enoch inspired several ancient pseudepigraphic texts. The Book of Enoch (generally known as “1st Enoch”) is part of the Biblical canon in the Ethiopian Orthodox tradition. “2nd Enoch” is an ancient text unrelated to 1st Enoch, which is sometimes called “The Secrets of Enoch.” Because the text was translated into Old Bulgarian and was widely used among the Medieval Bogomils, 2nd Enoch is sometimes known as Slavonic Enoch. The text claims to be Enoch’s record of his visit to the Ten Heavens with archangels as guides. John Hamer of Toronto Centre Place will review the text, consider its authorship, dating, and influence in antiquity, the Middle Ages, and today.

Save the date and join the livestream to participate in the discussion and to ask questions to our lecturer during the Q&A.

I’m so sorry Mr Hamer and Centre Place for some of the hateful comments left in these videos. I’m so happy these have continued in spite of them. I found solace here during the beginning of the pandemic, and so grateful for the education and community

I love how much is written about and attributed to this character. Even things as far out there as him being Thoth and builder of the great pyramid. I’m seriously considering naming my first son Enoch because it is such a cool name with a cool history.

Church Slavonic is still in use as the liturgical language in a number of Orthodox churches and a number of Catholic Eastern Rite Churches.

@10:26 - Shem is Noah's son. Seth is Adam's son.

Just thought I'd clarify. Thank you for all of these wonderful videos!

47:23 - someone asks during the Q & A about the 3rd heaven... when was 2 Corithians written? Was it 14 years after Stephen was stoned?

Dear Mr. Hammer, your talks on Bible are so inspiring that make me fallen in love with the history & the development of Christianity & other Abrahamic religions! Do you have some suggestion on book & study for independent researchers that want to delve deep into the subjects? Any references or book list would be so helpful to me!

Wish you to be healthy & happy,

Cheer!

The interesting thing about the phrase "in his days" associated with peleg, is that "his days" overlaps pretty much very other patriarch on your visual chart showing the overlaps of their lives. so, whatever happened in his days, happened in their days as well. either way, interesting lecture, thanks for all of these lectures, you do a great work.

Thank you so much for these lectures! Learning loads 😊 do you have a suggestion for a good translation of any of the books of Enoch for someone who isn't scholarly?

I read Uriel's Machine ages ago and became interested in Enoch, but my attempts to read the source material failed due to a confusing translation. I've been thinking about returning to the ideas in Uriel's Machine with more information. (though not from a perspective of trusting the authors,

All other patriarchs say they had sons and daughters and lived so many years and they died. Enoch is the only one doesn’t say he died.

6:30 Shem is Adam's son? In Christianity, Shem is the son of Noah. Is the Torah really that different than the Old Testament?

25:00 - I think I'm related to Augustine. People do not realize the troubles that they bring upon themselves. In Revelation, the 'prideful' grab the mocking and "where is your God" comments as some source of 'external' evil, when instead the 'question' will be answered by the facts that God is misrepresented, leaves us no responsibility, and will even fly out of the sky to come and save those who are not worthy to be claimed not saved. There is certainly a 'rod' for these situations, but my heart is broken for those who claim to 'see' and yet are 'blind'.

Fascinating that the Bogomils (Christian gnostic group) heavily used 2 Enoch. My understanding is that 2 Enoch is also an important text in Merkavah (Jewish) mysticism and the Kabbalah. Raises the question: Did Bogomils (& other chr. gnostics) practice aspects of Merkavah mysticism?
