Early Impressions of Eagle Dynamics' Mi-24P Hind

ED's new Hind is a phenomenal cold war veteran and joins the Ka-50 as a true redfor' heavy attack helicopter. But, er, what's it like?

Here's a brief synopsis of my thoughts on this hulking helicopter.

Admittedly, I'm a passionate rotorhead, but so far, and for the most part, I'm absolutely loving the Mi-24P!! I'm still learning some of the features and I still haven't practiced with all the weapons, nor done any night flying yet. I love flying with the older 60/70's era tech, especially when it comes to navigation & comms etc. There is certainly some tuning and additional features required as we step through EA. Great addition and well done so far ED!!.

From the last video available from Polychop on the Kiowa, it was an interview with Casmo, they said that the helicopter was going through some approval process from Bell Helicopters. It seems at the time, before 2.7, the helo was very much done and only needed to go trough some bureaucracy. Since then, no sign from them in the horizon. I believe they have to go through this to get the green light to release it.

this was my first helicopter purchase from DCS. I tried to fly it when it came out and I was not ready for it lol. And was scared away.... came back to it a week ago when a friend convinced me to try it again and he really helped me out. It was really hard to take off and land and hover for several days of practice for me. then it clicked, and in the end i think its made me a better fixed wing pilot. I used to dial in a lot of curves for pitch roll axis as I believe I was quite ham fisted. Now ive dialed all those curves way back on my fixed wings and just feel more in tune with my crafts. Absolutely loving sneaking through the towns blowing up baddies and returning home. Though more often than not I get blown up!

Cosmo has done some great videos on how to fly and really has saved me too from the burning fireball haha. I love the module as it’s my first helicopter and was really skeptical to buy

I am loving it, it's one of the most iconic Helos, and playing in VR is an awesome experience.

There are a few little kinks, I would like to see a separate rudder pedal trim reset as turning off Yaw AP leaves any pedal offset and so does taking over from the AI pilot, this can cause issues if near the ground as the only way to centre (zero them) them is to reset trim which also resets any cyclic trim (not ideal)

Other than that I am very happy with the EA version, it is mission-ready and a joy to fly. The moving map is a great aid and certainly better than being in the Huey with zero nav-aids. I am more than happy to stay in the back seat, using ATGM's is easy enough and still feels rewarding when a hit lands.

I am looking forward to the first campaign.

Just glad that the hind is fairly feature complete. Most systems are working and the chopper is quite competent. I doubt the apache will be so feature complete since it has quite a bit more systems, sort of like the f-18 which took many years to get to where it is.

Got Hind a few days ago. Still learning take off and landings but flying is very nice with and without autopilot aid on Aerobatic Caucasus server. Lovely helicopter in respectable stage of development at release. When it comes to multiplayer I played it a lot on CAPTURE BASES PvE server and realised that with current antitank missiles its combat value is small. Its short range prevents the helicopter from attacking any advanced targets. Had to go for Vulcans and semi-armored AAA vehicles or trucks as tanks won`t get destroyed even after multiple hits. Petrovic misses targets 30-50% of time. You can come a bit closer [ 3.5km ] to get better chance for kill, but have to still fly more-less in that direction until impact. By then you are 2.5 km from other neighbouring targets who will shower you with cannons and hit multiple times during left or right evasive manuever. It will take good 30 secs before you turn around and find yourself out of cannons rage. I heard that more advanced missiles should be introduced later. Hoping that that will happen as to give Hind chance be out of AAA cannons at least. Also hoping that Petrovic`s accuracy will improve, too.

the only issue I've had so far is the insane capabilities of ground troops and armored vehicles seeing you miles away through trees. None so far with Mi-24 specifically. Hopefully the ground AI get acknowledged as an issue.

Not that we would ever get a “what if” module, but the Comanche would certainly be a cool one. That and the Mi-28.

But great review!

The Hind is a cool chopper, my first in DCS actually, nothing to compare it to but nonetheless can give my personnal experience of it so far.

In terms of features, it seems to be pretty well complete ! Nothing important apparant is really needed in my opinion, you have a pretty interesting range of weapons to use, and from what is planned, nothing game changing is planned until the new guided missiles.
The flight model seems good even though a few things could be tweaked a little, especially a certain oscillation i get when cruising that gets really annoying the moment you're on a missle attack and Petro is trying to aim that thing on target...
I've encountered some strange behaviors here and there and some that appeared to be clear bugs but otherwise nothing that totally broke my experience :)

I could go on and mention a bunch of other things but damn this is the comment section of utube haha, plus i'm being lazy typing more :p

My first helo and I really like it. Toying between kiowa and apache now as I'm a western flyer by heart....but which one? Oh dear 🤔

As for cockpit and lack of modern stuff. One must look at its contemporaries cockpits first.

Prickly, can you tell me if it's just my TV, or is the intro about twice the volume as the speech? I click your videos in an instant every time, then wake up half the street... Every time.

I thought the KA-50 weapon & system upgrades where scrapped due to a Russian law that was introduced. & it was only getting an eye candy upgrade at no cost. But if all of the upgrades are coming with the small fee awesome. The Hind is certainly impressive but I will not be getting it. I will not be getting any new DCS aircraft until the having to rebind all of my controls after an update is sorted. Cool video. Thanks for sharing 👍🏻👍🏻🙃🙃
