The U.S. Legacy in Afghanistan: Past, Present, and Future

Two decades after the 9/11 attacks and the overthrow of the Taliban regime, the United States is withdrawing its military forces from Afghanistan. But the war is far from over. Please join the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) Transnational Threats Project on Wednesday, July 7 for a conversation on the U.S. legacy in Afghanistan, the current U.S. withdrawal, and the future trajectory of the war. Seth Jones, Harold Brown Chair and Director of the International Security Program at CSIS, will be joined by Carter Malkasian, who is the author of The American Way of War in Afghanistan: A History, and Gina Bennett, who has a 30-year career in the Central Intelligence Agency.

Carter Malkasian served as the former special assistant for strategy to Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman General Joseph Dunford, from 2015 to 2019. He has extensive experience working in conflict zones and has spent nearly two years in Garmser district, Helmand province, Afghanistan, as a State Department political officer. Gina Bennett serves as a senior analyst for the National Counterterrorism Center and has written extensively on counterterrorism. She authored the 1993 report that warned of the growing danger of Osama Bin Laden and the 2006 National Intelligence Estimate “Trends in Global Terrorism: Implications for the U.S.”
