In this video, we'll briefly discuss what RADIUS authentication is, and then dive into the pros and cons.
RADIUS authentication uses the client-server model to authenticate and authorize users to log into a network, or network infrastructure gear. The pros of RADIUS authentication are: increased network security, because RADIUS allows each user to log into a network with their own unique credentials, rather than a shared password; IT doesn't have to worry about changing a shared network password every time someone leaves the organization or a security event occurs; it creates a central point for user, and system authentication and authorization; it simplifies access control, which is imperative for larger networks managed by multiple IT admins; it enables 802.1x, which uniquely encrypts user sessions and can easily be added into existing infrastructure; it provides secure VPN authentication; it's easy to activate and deactivate, because hosted Cloud RADIUS servers are managed by a third party, which means all you have to do is point your networking infrastructure to the Cloud RADIUS endpoint for authentication; and finally, Cloud RADIUS easily integrates with your current system, due to its inherent flexibility and zero traditional setup requirements.
The cons of RADIUS authentication are: when people think about RADIUS, they often picture the traditional on-prem infrastructure, which is quickly disappearing across many organizations. Another con is the initial setup for a non-hosted RADIUS server. RADIUS can also pose new security vulnerabilities to your organization, if not implemented correctly. And lastly, there's a vast array of configuration options, which can make setup complicated and daunting. Luckily, all of these cons can be avoided through the use of a modern cloud-based RADIUS solution in place of a traditional on-prem RADIUS solution.
With so much traditional infrastructure moving into the cloud, it only makes sense that RADIUS follows suit. To make this a reality, JumpCloud offers Cloud RADIUS, which gives you access to all of the benefits of RADIUS, with none of the on-prem setup or hassle. A solution like this means that your organization doesn't have to worry about any of the cons listed above, because the setup is done for you.
