Coffee shops are unique places, aren’t they? People go there to seemingly get a coffee, but end up entangled in communication, observation, contemplation or some other inconspicuous - tion.

I’ve always wondered how the feeling of comforting solitude can so simply coexist with the hustle and bustle of the chaotic room. How neat is the problem-solving ability of the universe!

So, the other day, when I was sitting in a coffee shop, I read about an interesting thing -

a basic problem-solving principle called Kidlin’s Law, and I’d like to share this information with you in hopes it might come useful. In brief, it states:

“If you write the problem down clearly, then the matter is half solved.”

How to implement this law in practice?

1. Identify the problem, state it simply and clearly. You also need to think why it is perceived as a problem.

2. Determine the root causes of the problem - Where exactly does this problem come from, and what is its priority level?

3. Define the goals - What will be achieved when the problem is solved?

4. Develop solutions by creating a detailed planning and strategy, that includes the list of tools you’re going to use.

5. Evaluate and implement solutions. Here you need to think whether your plan is realistic, reliable and effective; whether the solution is technically possible; whether it fits within an acceptable timeframe.

From what I’ve read, Albert Einstein implemented this principle a lot. He said:

‘If I had hour to solve a problem, I’d spend 55 minutes thinking about the problem, and five minutes thinking about the solution’.
