The insulting comments towards Putin might not have been as off the cuff as they appear. In politics, building an overly simplified or exaggerated narrative, can be an effective tool in offering an explanation to a complex problem and has the potential benefit of getting under your opponent’s skin. I think Putin is probably both highly narcissistic and highly insecure. He’s paranoid, overly concerned with his self image and lacks genuine confidence. He curates these self aggrandizing photo ops, engages in bullying and bravado to cover this up. His actions are truly ridiculous and Johnson and Wallace are humorously pointing this out. Probably hoping to undermine Putin’s image and confidence in order to weaken his support among his followers. These insult tactics are typically ineffective against normal healthy people but they can be somewhat impactful against immature school yard bullies and their cronies.
