Populism was invented to recruit working people to fight with the intellectual thinkers from a socialist movement in Imperial Russia. In those days, it meant rallying working people and the peasantry in a class struggle against the wealthy monarchy. Our current thread of U.S. populism means something very different, however. We've lost sight of the class warfare, and are now divided against the very educated Enlightenment-era thinkers who originated the movement.
