For fine hair like ours, I just realized protective styles with added hair is a NO GO. They cute, they fly, but my hair be going bye bye and they aren't worth it lol. Wig life is the only life for me now (I never use glue or gel to tack them down)

I definitely did have some box braids that wreak havoc on my edges, that was when I decided that protective styles are not very protective at all and said no more. I just wash and conditioned and wore wash n goes or twists out, my edges have since recovered.

Braids use to damage my hair also but since I have done my own braids I have noticed minimal damage.

I did constant protective styling over the course of about 7yrs.. Would keep my style in 4-5 wks, wear my hair down a week and do it again.. I did this until the shops closed down in the panni.. My hair at the time I stopped "protective styling" was to my natural waist.. I noticed after a few weeks of wearing my hair free that it didn't have the same life it once had.. I did all I could with it for about a year then finally went to see a curl specialist instead of just my regular stylist.. Because now I wanted to see them curls, the way I used to.. I was diagnosed with extensive cuticle damage and dehydration.. Though I washed my hair weekly while styled and took out monthly, for my hair, that was a disaster.. All those inches I grew and was able to retain were useless.. Leading me to a big chop in Oct 2021.. And where my profile picture is from.. So though I had some new growth and didn't have to chop my hair all the way off, I did lose at least 12-15inches of hair.. I'm now on a health as well as growth journey, washing my hair twice a week, using botanical gels, styling in solely wash and go's.. And my hair is flourishing.. It is now looking like the head of hair I'd had as a teen.. I'm now nearing 40 and only about 6months into a brand new hair journey.. If nothing else, this panni made me relearn how to truly take care of my hair.. Silver

Yes Sis!!!
I trusted a hairdresser to do me a sew-in weave. It was my first time both having a weave and using that hairdresser...
Not only did she make me look more Yardie than the compere in the film Dancehall Queen, she did it way too tight and charged me more than her original quote...
I couldn't bear the pain and took it out after a few days.
Half my scalp came out with it too.
I rectified the problem by sticking to doing my own braids and NEVER having a weave again.

All my protective styles damaged my hair because i was never putting my hair’s health first. I would leave braids and crochets styles in for 2-3 months to get my moneys worth and my fine thin delicate hair really can’t handle that. Also was too lazy to properly remove frontal wigs and literally just ripped out my whole hairline. Im learning from my mistakes and listening to my hair now.

Let's get rid of the myth: braiding is NOT a protective hairstyle. I remember sitting at the salon and watching 90% of ladies after the removal of braids have obvious hairline/bald spots from the tension of the style. The longer they kept braiding the more their hairline would go further north and the texture get more rough and thinner. Like what you like but be prepared for the consequences.

Yup! Back to back braided protective styles broke my hair pretty bad. I am now trying to nurse it back by weekly deep conditioning and VERY low maintenance.

I had some corn rows with feed in hair. Those things were soooo tight that I could barely close my eyes. Lol. The breakage when I took them out was too much. I was so mad at myself for allowing her to braid my hair that tight. Never again. That was about 2 years ago. I have had braids since but I am my own advocate.

I am about to remove four month old, once refreshed braids. Pray for me y'all. Great verse in the beginning.

I got breakage along my edges from back-to-back knotless braids installs. I now ask the braider to not make them so tight around my hairline, leave out my baby hairs, and I limit the number of braid installs to twice a year. I use an ayurvedic and JBCO oil blend on my edges and they have recovered nicely.

Hello Grace. That thin spot in the front made my heart drop. I hope you have success in growing your hair back to a healthy state.

I once left braids for 3 months and my hair was so thin after so I cut it. A lot of us fine haired 4c can not do that. Coarse hair people can and retain lots of length. My hair is super thick now about shoulder length and I only wear wash and go's now with no gel or maybe a custard.

I've never had those kind of cornrows as they do look like they pull, But I had box braids and a whole plat fell off, I have a perfect square of baldness that I'm trying to nurse back 😔 taking its time but getting there. Thanks for sharing as Always and have a week as beautiful as your soul ❤

The lace fronts are making me a little thin around the edges. I started using henna once a month and I use spray-on castor oil. So far so good. I like the restoration routine you used. Your hair didn't shed too bad and still looks healthy.

I was going to do some braids next week…. Now I am rethinking it. Hmmmm. Be blessed. Have a great week.

I used foam to give me a sleek ponytail look. Came out great. Liked it so much I applied foam several more times during the week. Big mistake. Caused tangles and what felt like locked clumps. Lost a lot of hair. Babying my hair for it to be restored now.

I only have large knotless braids for up to 6 weeks now and that works brilliantly.
